From mounds to stars

We invite you to visit the Molėtai region near the capital. It is also rich in its deep history, natural monuments, abundance of lakes and the only one in Lithuania – Molėtai Observatory.

We start our journey around this country with a visit to the geographical center of Europe. Specialists in various fields have been searching for this center for almost a few hundred years. According to different calculations, there are signs marking the center of Europe in Belarus, Hungary, Estonia, Poland and Slovakia. In 1989 the researchers from the French National Institute of Geography have found that according to the latest calculations, the real center of Europe is in Lithuania! Here we are now. And to mark such an impressive fact, in 1997 a stone weighing as much as 9 tons was rolled on a hill corresponding to the set coordinates of 54 degrees 54 minutes north latitude and 25 degrees 19 minutes east longitude. It is gratifying that this extraordinary object has also entered the Guinness Book of World Records!

Molėtai region is unimaginable without Dubingiai and the Dukes Radvilas, who had one of their estates here. The most convenient way to get to them is through a wooden bridge built on the longest lake Asveja in Lithuania. After climbing the Dubingiai mound, you will be able to admire the impressive panorama, the centuries-old oaks, the special tranquility that exists only here. Dubingiai Castle, which belonged to the Radvilas, stood on this mound. Barbora Radvilaitė, one of the most beautiful women of Europe at that time, lived in it for some time and wrote longing letters full of love to her husband Sigismund Augustus, who was residing in Wawel, Krakow at that time. Today, the surviving fragments of the Radvilai Palace, covered with a hood, and the site of the former Evangelical Reformed Church with the Radvilai Burial Pantheon await us here. Let’s take a walk on the educational trail in the castle site with the observation stops near the archeological and natural objects.

After a long walk, we rush to Mindūnai to taste branded fish soup. The scent and taste of this fish is already shrouded in legend and we can’t resist it either! This delicacy is cooked on a campfire, called “Firmine Rimydžių žuviene”. It is a special taste fish soup of mother Irena and son Tom, who participate in international chef championships. It won’t be boring because we’ll watch the fish soup stew on a campfire in a pot and listen to a story about the cooking process. Saturated with delicious fish soup, Irena will invite everyone not only to a joint song, but also to catch a fish with a mini fishing rod. It is said that we will be accompanied by a march!

We end our tour around Molėtai region at Molėtai Astronomical Observatory. Let us rise from the earth above the sky and experience the joy of discovery at this observatory! Here we will get acquainted with Lithuanian and world astronomical news, telescopes, colorful photos of planets, stars and galaxies of amazing beauty. Both day and night tours are organized here. Which one will you choose?
