Palanga

Palanga – a resort town in the western part of Lithuania (since 1921), is located on the shores of the Baltic Sea. Administratively in the status of municipal government is part of Klaipeda County and is located 26 km north of Klaipeda, 19 km from the border with Latvia. First mentioned in written monuments in 1161; The date of foundation is the mention in the chronicles of the German order in 1253. According to tradition, in Palanga lived Biruta, a widelotka (priestess), who took the wife of Gediminas son Kestutis Biruta became the mother of Vitaut the Great.

December 31, 1435 – according to the Treaty of Brest, Palanga departed for ever to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The main occupation of the population of Palanga until the XIX century were: collecting amber, fishing, trade. By sea from Palanga and neighboring Sventoji, amber, honey, wax was exported. In 1701, the port facilities in Palanga and Šventoji were destroyed by the Swedish fleet. In 1795, after the third partition of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Palanga, together with the rest of Lithuania, became part of the Russian Empire.

One of the most beautiful corners of Palanga is the palace of the Tyszkiewicz, surrounded by a huge park designed by E.Andre. In the palace there is the Amber Museum, where amber is represented in all its variety. The collection of inclusive is the largest in the world. Amber is a symbol of Lithuania. August Evenings on the terrace of the palace are concerts and poetry evenings. The holiday season in Palanga is marked by a variety of cultural entertainment. In Palanga there is an interesting museum of the Lithuanian artist Antanas Moncis, who worked in Paris.
