Lithuanian capitals – Vilnius and Trakai

We invite you to travel around Vilnius, the official current capital since 1323, and the old capital, one of the most important political centers of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Trakai. From Kernavė which was the political and economic center of Lithuania Grand Duke Gediminas arrived in Old Trakai, which became the capital, but for a short time. After that, the capital was moved to Vilnius. The old Trakai played a short but significant role in the history of Lithuania. Quite quickly it was overshadowed by Trakai, which the rulers of the Gediminas dynasty, especially Vytautas the Great began to like. The Old Trakai was a capital when the fiercest battles against the Teutonic Order took place. Kęstutis, unable to defend himself against the aggressor, moved his residence from the Old Trakai to a territory surrounded by Waters, called. New Trakai in the second part of the XIV century. He began to build a castle on the peninsula of the lake. Grand Duke of Lithuania Vytautas was born in Old Trakai. The old Trakai Castle has not been rebuilt since the last crusader siege. Vytautas invited the Benedictines to settle in it. In commemoration of the 750th anniversary of Grand Duke Vytautas, 9 sculptures were erected along the road from Vilnius to Old Trakai: St. Peter. St. George The Winner, St. Casimir, Escape from Egypt, Saint. Catherine of Alexandria, Pieta, Vytautas the Great, Kęstutis and Birutė, St. Benedict, Mother with the Baby.

Trakai, sometimes called Venice of Lithuania, is an incredibly beautiful, city., surrounded by lakes. It was a favorite place of recreation of nobles already before it became a capital. Clear water and clean lake, wind, amazing nature, magnificent castles – it all relaxes and gives great satisfaction. Trakai is located on the territory of Trakai historical national park with an area of 8.2 thousand hectares. The castle, built on the island of Lake Galve is a unique complex of defensive architecture, accessible only by the bridge. It is a major tourist attraction. For many people, Trakai is also associated with the traditional pies „kibinai“ made by an ethnic minority kataites. You can meet those proud people – karaites in Trakai. Trakai-the cultural center of their community. The karaites were invited to Lithuania by Vytautas the Great.

Vilnius, as the capital of Lithuania, is mentioned in written sources in 1323.  Almost for 700 years, Vilnius is the most important political, cultural, economic center of the country. The cozy old town of Vilnius, with its narrow and romantic paths and streets, is a great place for walks, as well as an opportunity to enjoy the breathtaking views: architectural buildings, charming green oases, and interesting museums. The Old town can be called the soul of Vilnius science and culture, ancient manuscript – here the diversity of eastern and western cultures intersects. Even if the first impression is that the old town is small, it occupies 359.5 hectares and it is the historic center of Vilnius. It was the first site of the Baltic States included in the list of World Heritage list protected by UNESCO.
